Seize the summer!
The first term of the 2019-20 school year, the Summer Term, is just a few months away. Mark your calendars! This summer's session will run June 17 - July 5; no classes on July 4. Courses that will earn credits for the regular school year will be offered in English, history, computer science, and art. Full course descriptions are available at the Upper School Summer Programs webpage. Registration for non-credit summer programs, including academic enrichment, sports, and outdoor courses, is open online for Middle School students and can be found on the Middle School Summer Programs webpage. Elementary offerings can be found on the Elementary School Summer Programs webpage.
Depending on demand, programs may be added or dropped. Programs will be confirmed one week prior to the first day of each course. To register to use your Website/My BackPack username and password to login into your Radius Dashboard. Summer Term and Program Registration is in the left column under Child Summary.
This year, there are new offerings that are sure to spark your child's interest. Here are a few highlights:
Hogwarts Camp is filling up fast! Does your child love Harry Potter? How about science? Then this offering is the magic answer! What could be more magical than spending the day learning the basics of science by creating potions, practicing care of magical creatures, and taking care of your own "dragon eggs", and even participating in a game of Quidditch during breaks and snack time? Visit our website under Elementary School Programs for a more detailed description. Open to rising grades 3-6.
Sun Valley Community School's renowned Outdoor Program takes on summer! In addition to our usual outdoor offerings taught by our expert faculty, new this year for middle school students is the Middle School Backpacking Experience. This particular course truly does teach the basics of backpacking and is a perfect opportunity for beginners who are looking to "get outside" and learn all they can. See our website under Middle School Programs for a more detailed description.
For high school students, new this year is the College Application Boot Camp. Seniors can begin their senior year by completing the Common App. and receiving the expertise of Sun Valley Community School's dynamic college counseling team. There are a great many colleges that accept the Common Application. It is a standard form through which you report and submit your family information, academic and testing data, activities and work experience, and your essay. It is not difficult, but it can be tedious and time-consuming. If you would like to get the application all filled out and proofread before you start your senior year, this workshop is for you! In the four days, we will complete all sections of the application except the essay (consider writing that in our essay workshop!) and you will head into the application process with a great deal of the work already completed. For students who wish to apply to schools in the University of California system, there is a separate application, and once we finish the Common App, students can start on that as well. Once the fall term starts, you will be glad to have this out of the way and you will be on your way to being ready to apply to college! Open to students entering the 12th grade.
