Beginning on February 22, our Elementary School is hosting "Read-to-Feed" benefitting The Hunger Coalition. The effort will run for two weeks, ending on Friday, March 8, and the money our students raise through their voracious reading efforts will benefit an organization doing important work to fight hunger in our community.
Read-to-Feed co-chairs Sara Pettit and Kristen Dittami have worked with Calysta Phillips, our Community Connections + Service Learning Coordinator, and Janet Salvoni, our Elementary School division head, to organize service learning opportunities leading up to the Read-to-Feed event that revolve around food insecurity and how to fight it. These include:
All-School Canned/Boxed Food and Formula Drive. Here's a list of the 10 most-needed foods at The Hunger Coalition. February 11-20.
Tours of The Hunger Coalition Warehouse for students in grades 3-5.
Planting and caring for seed-starts with grades K-2 that will be donated to The Hunger Coalition in the spring.
Raising Awareness about Food origins, food prices, food insecurity, and community need.

If you are the parent of a Sun Valley Community School Elementary student, encourage your child to reach out to relatives, family friends, coaches, doctors and others to ask for pledges to sponsor their reading. Help your child practice how to explain the impact this Read-to-Feed event will have on our local community.
