Forty-four years ago, Community School founder Sam Hazard called for the first Community School Fall Campout. This past week, we had nearly 300 students and staff in grades 6 through twelve head to 16 high alpine locations to participate in this brilliant annual tradition.
Relationships were established and re-established between students. Mentorship and leadership roles were embraced by our oldest students, and our youngest and newest students dove into this opening backcountry adventure with verve. Trust was built between students and faculty members, which will pay huge dividends in the classroom as we ask students to stretch themselves as learners. A positive, infectious energy permeated the different trips, as students and staff returned to campus tired but flashing ear-to-ear smiles. What a great way to start the 2017-2018 school year!
