Congratulations to senior Cutthroat Ben Colbeck on being named a National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist in the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program!
The Sun Valley Community School Blog featuring stories from our Elementary, Middle and Upper Schools. It's a behind-the-scenes look at life as a Cutthroat.
In early February, Tricia St. George’s 2nd grade class welcomed 21 famous folks from the past AND the present. Think Annie Oakley, superstar Beyonce, actress Marilyn Monroe, former US presidents Teddy Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln, and yes, current USA Olympic ice hockey phenom Hilary Knight.
In Brazil, they are called Bahia Bands, which are basically wish bracelets. The bands have a rich history spanning over 200 years and have recently become more popular throughout the world. Thought to bring the wearer good luck, each band’s color conveys a message or a desire. And now, at SVCS, ES and MS art teacher Cara Frost has brought this beautiful international tradition to the Elementary School, where students have been expanding their understanding of weaving with a symbolic weaving of wishes.
Our College Counseling Department recently hosted the annual Alumni Panel, a longstanding tradition where SVCS alumni speak to current students about their experience in college. The ups, the downs, the challenges, and of course, the ways in which their experience at Sun Valley Community School helped them as they navigate the college world. This year’s panel included Christine DuFur ‘19 (Sarah Lawrence College), Eden Rose ‘21 (Tulane University), Crosby Boe ‘21(Davidson College), and Jasper Mott ‘20 (USC). Each of these students brought their own experiences to the panel from transferring to doing a semester abroad. They encouraged Cutthroats to keep an open mind, that it’s ok to change your mind, described the process of declaring a major, and that there are different pathways for everyone! We caught up with Eden, Crosby, and Jasper to find out more.
Two Sun Valley Community School seniors recently received academic recognition. Sun Valley Community School senior Maria Mendoza was recently named a semifinalist for the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation's Cooke College Scholarship and senior Ben Colbeck was named a National Merit Scholarship Finalist.
