SVSA: The Results Are In!

For many years, SVSA was in startup mode, but after 12 years, we are seeing SVSA graduates excel on the collegiate, national, and international stages! Student-athletes from the Wood River Valley are joined by athletes from around the country and the world at SVSA because the SVSA formula is working. 

Cutthroats Lend a Hand

A long-standing pillar of SVCS, service learning across all divisions has been an important part of this year for many Cutthroats.

Engl Cup 2024

Engl Cup is one of our longest-standing and most beloved school traditions! This year’s event for grades 2-12 took place in March on both Trail Creek Campus and Dollar Mountain (don’t worry, our littlest Cutthroats celebrated on campus!).

Earth Week 2024

At Sun Valley Community School, we celebrate Earth Day every year by extending it to an entire week.  Our faculty and staff embrace environmental awareness daily and incorporate it into their classes whenever possible. 

US Performing Arts: "Indecent"

In February, the Sun Valley Community School Players brought the Tony Award-winning play Indecent to Sun Valley Community School’s stage.

Inside the Classroom: Middle School Eclipse

On April 8, 2024, millions across North America, Mexico, and Canada experienced the wonder of the historic Great North American Eclipse. In Texas alone, 1 million tourists were predicted to travel to the Lone Star State. A stunning 400,000 were expected in Dallas in hopes of experiencing eclipse totality. And joining eclipse fans in Dallas were 11 Middle School Cutthroats and Middle School science teachers Zach Manta and Kira Faller. 

Inside the Classroom: 5th Grade

Walk into Dana Covington’s 5th grade classroom this spring and you would need to step over design drawings on the floor, on the windows, and on the walls. Designs are filled with math equations to ensure that students’ colorful and imaginative room design fit within the given 400 square feet. 

Community Connections: Fall 2023

A longstanding pillar for SVCS, service learning took a new turn six years ago when Calysta Phillips took over as the Service Learning and Community Connections Coordinator. As of press time, SVCS was in the 5th year of 30 Days of Kindness, a concerted effort by all to increase kindness around our campus during the month of October (also National Bullying Prevention Month), as well as the 3rd year of The Community Table/La Mesa Comunitaria.

Mountain Bike: Season Recap 2023

Congratulations to our Cutthroat Mountain Bike team for taking 5th place (and a spot on the podium!) in the Division 2 category for the 2023 IICL State Championships in Boise! An admiral showing for the team’s 2nd year.

US: Volleyball Season Recap 2023

Eighteen Upper School girls took to the volleyball courts this fall to field both a JV and varsity squad. JV finished their season 7-3, ending the season with a solid win in two sets over Richfield. Under returning coach Natalie Heurkins and assistant coaches Candice Pate and Aris Flood, other notable victories this season included Lighthouse Christian in three sets, and Dietrich and Twin Falls Christian Academy, both in four.

US: Cross Country Season Recap 2023

Coaches Fiona Ahearne, Leila Hauser, and Ryan Rosmarin coached what is believed to be the largest crew of cross country runners in recent Cutthroat history. The team started off the season with an auspicious start: winning the Wood River Invitational in early September and continuing to improve over the following two months. 

US Boys Soccer: Season Recap 2023

Forty-one boys turned out this fall to field both a JV and varsity squad. The varsity team took home Runners-up honors at the recent 3A IHSAA State Soccer Tournament. 

US Girls Soccer: Season Recap 2023

Head Coach Kelly Feldman returned for her 23rd year with assistant coaches Erika Daly ‘04, Jordan Fitzgerald ‘14, and Mackenzie Price. 33 girls turned out to play this season, led by Seniors Mia Hansmeyer, Scarlet Rixon, Ruby Crist, Mattie Embree, Meredith Bromley and Grayson Schmitz. 

US Performing Arts: "Mean Girls" Comes to the Cutthroat Stage

Mark your calendars for November 2-4 because the ‘fetch’ hit musical Mean Girls (High School Version) is coming to Sun Valley! The Sun Valley Community School Players will bring this hilarious musical from book writer Tina Fey to the Sun Valley Community School stage (Nell Benjamin/lyricist; Jeff Richmond/composer).

MS: Dissecting Salmon for Knowledge

Seventh graders recently took to scalpels, scissors, probes, and forceps to learn hands-on about the anatomy of one of the more vital fish in our region: the Chinook salmon.
