Meet Middle School Head Anthony Colello

It’s only been a few months into the new gig, but new Middle School Head Anthony Colello is already making his mark. Anthony’s educational philosophy encompasses an understanding of the importance of relationships and community in the educational journey as well as the delicate art of balance. Anthony says, “The greatest challenges that our schools face in the coming years require a tolerance for, and even an appreciation for, nuance—the ability to hold what may seem to be competing values, simultaneously. We must be responsive to changing circumstances while also remaining firmly rooted in shared institutional values. This requires us to be reflective, while also being forward thinking. Our main goal as educators is to help students develop into people of integrity and character. We must stay grounded in the values that we know will be as important for tomorrow as they were for our past.” When he is not talking to middle schoolers about Harry Potter or Fantasy Football leagues, Anthony likes to cook, play golf, and spend time with his 2 year old son, Max, and wife Alex. 

Anthony came to SVCS from Seattle where he worked at Eastside Preparatory School in a number of roles including College Counselor, Grade Level Coordinator, and classroom teacher. He earned his Masters of Public Policy from Georgetown University with an emphasis on Education Policy and Political Strategy. Before that, he earned his Bachelors from Santa Clara University. He’s passionate about education and the Seattle Mariners. 

What is your favorite thing about being a Middle School Head? As in, what brings you joy each day? 
Interacting with our students. I love so many parts of my job, but being with our kids is the best part. They are wonderful. They are kind, funny, weird (in the best way), inquisitive, and a joy to be around. Working with students is why I started my career in education ,and it is what brings me joy everyday. 

What are some challenges of being a Middle School Head? 
I suppose the biggest challenge is that there isn't ever enough time in the day to accomplish everything that you'd hoped to. It is really important to me that I get to spend time with our students as much as possible. I am learning the flow of our school's schedule and feeling more and more comfortable with it every day. 

Why Middle School? 
Middle School is the best. It is a time of immense growth and development for young people and to be a part of that journey with them is truly a privilege. Middle School is challenging, and messy, and full of awkward moments, and that is what makes it fun. If we are doing it right, we are leaning in to that messiness and enjoying everything that comes with it. 

Being new to the Wood River Valley, what are you looking forward to doing? 
I have loved the ease with which I can get my son outdoors. Max, who just turned two, loves to be outside. He loves to run in the grass, and jump in puddles, and throw rocks into the river. To be able to see the joy that those experiences bring him, and to share in them with him, is a true gift.

You love to cook. What is your 'best dish'? 
My best dish is my mom's lasagna and meatballs (her version is much better). I come from a very large Irish/Italian extended family, and the kitchen has always been a place where we gather together. I am a firm believer that preparing and sharing a meal with people is a great way to build community. I am hoping to share my love of cooking and passion for food with my son as he gets older. 

You're a few months into the new gig, what have you learned so far or what are you looking forward to this year? 
It would be impossible to capture all that I have learned in my first months on the job in this space, and that is why it is so exciting. I love to learn. I hope that I never stop learning. One of my biggest takeaways from these first few months is how wonderfully resilient and flexible our students and teachers are. They are quick to adapt and make the best of any situation. That is such an important characteristic for a successful school community. 

You've been here a few months, now, what activities have you been able to enjoy? 
My family and I have been able to hike, bike, go out to eat at the amazing restaurants here in the Valley, tour our friends through town, and soak up the sunshine. My one regret is that I have not been able to get out onto the golf course as of yet (one of my passions), but I am determined to make it happen before the snow arrives. 

Tell us a little bit about your passions, adventures, hobbies? Are you an outdoors guy?
I certainly cannot claim to be an outdoors guy -- all of the students who prepared for Fall Campout with me can attest to that. I am really excited to learn though! I have loved being able to work with our students and amazing Outdoor Program staff as I build my skills and stretch myself in new ways. As far as passions, I love to travel, cook, play golf, and spend time with my family. I also am an avid sports fan. I am a true Seattle sports diehard, and am currently struggling through yet another potential Mariners' late-season collapse. 

What drew you to SV Community School?
In the end, schools are all about the people. The people are what make a school special. From the moment I stepped foot on campus during my visit, I could feel the level of care in this community. Every single person associated with our school takes pride in the community that has been built here, and I knew that it was something that I wanted to be a part of.

Anthony llegó a SVCS desde Seattle, donde trabajó en Eastside Preparatory School en varias funciones, como consejero universitario, coordinador de grado y maestro de aula. ¿Qué es lo que más le gusta de ser Director de una Escuela Media? Es decir, ¿qué es lo que le alegra cada día? 
La interacción con nuestros estudiantes. Me encantan muchas partes de mi trabajo, pero estar con nuestros niños es la mejor parte. Son maravillosos. Son amables, divertidos, raros (en el mejor sentido), curiosos y es un placer estar con ellos. Trabajar con los estudiantes es la razón por la que empecé mi carrera en la educación, y es lo que me da alegría todos los días. 

¿Cuáles son algunos de los retos de ser director de una Escuela Media? 
Supongo que el mayor desafío es que nunca hay suficiente tiempo en el día para lograr todo lo que uno espera. Para mí es muy importante pasar el mayor tiempo posible con nuestros alumnos. Estoy aprendiendo el flujo de nuestro horario escolar y me siento más y más cómodo con él cada día. 

¿Por qué la Escuela Media? 
La Escuela Media es lo mejor. Es un momento de inmenso crecimiento y desarrollo para los jóvenes y ser parte de ese viaje con ellos es realmente un privilegio. La Escuela Media es un reto, un desorden y está llena de momentos incómodos, y eso es lo que la hace divertida. Si lo hacemos bien, nos inclinamos hacia ese desorden y disfrutamos de todo lo que viene con él. 

Siendo nuevo en el Valle de Wood River, ¿qué le hace ilusión hacer? 
Me encanta la facilidad con la que puedo sacar a mi hijo al aire libre. A Max, que acaba de cumplir dos años, le encanta estar fuera. Le encanta correr por la hierba, saltar en los charcos y tirar piedras al río. Poder ver la alegría que le producen esas experiencias y compartirlas con él es un verdadero regalo.

Le encanta cocinar. ¿Cuál es su "mejor plato"? 
Mi mejor plato es la lasaña y las albóndigas de mi madre (su versión es mucho mejor). Vengo de una gran familia irlandesa/italiana, y la cocina siempre ha sido un lugar donde nos reunimos. Soy un firme creyente de que preparar y compartir una comida con la gente es una gran manera de construir una comunidad. Espero poder compartir mi amor por la cocina y mi pasión por la comida con mi hijo cuando crezca. 

Llevas unos meses de trabajo, ¿qué has aprendido hasta ahora o qué esperas de este año? 
Sería imposible plasmar en este espacio todo lo que he aprendido en mis primeros meses de trabajo, y por eso es tan emocionante. Me encanta aprender. Espero no dejar nunca de aprender. Una de las cosas que más he aprendido en estos primeros meses es lo maravillosamente resistentes y flexibles que son nuestros alumnos y maestros. Se adaptan rápidamente y sacan lo mejor de cualquier situación. Esta es una característica muy importante para el éxito de una comunidad escolar. 

Ya llevas unos meses aquí, ¿qué actividades has podido disfrutar? 
Mi familia y yo hemos podido hacer senderismo, montar en bicicleta, salir a comer a los increíbles restaurantes que hay aquí en el Valle, recorrer la ciudad con nuestros amigos y empaparnos del sol. Lo único que lamento es que todavía no he podido ir al campo de golf (una de mis pasiones), pero estoy decidido a hacerlo antes de que llegue la nieve. 

Háblenos un poco de sus pasiones, aventuras y aficiones. ¿Es usted un hombre de experiencias al aire libre?
Ciertamente no puedo decir que sea ese tipo de hombre - todos los estudiantes que se prepararon para el Campamento de Otoño conmigo pueden dar fe de ello. Sin embargo, ¡me encanta aprender! Me ha encantado poder trabajar con nuestros estudiantes y con el increíble personal del Programa de Actividades al Aire Libre, ya que he desarrollado mis habilidades y me he esforzado en nuevas formas. En cuanto a mis pasiones, me encanta viajar, cocinar, jugar al golf y pasar tiempo con mi familia. También soy un ávido fanático de los deportes. Soy un verdadero fanático de los deportes de Seattle, y actualmente estoy luchando por otro posible colapso de los Mariners a finales de la temporada. 

¿Qué le atrajo de la SV Community School?
Al final, las escuelas tienen que ver con la gente. La gente es lo que hace que una escuela sea especial. Desde el momento en que puse un pie en el campus durante mi visita, pude sentir el nivel de atención en esta comunidad. Cada persona asociada a nuestra escuela se enorgullece de la comunidad que se ha construido aquí, y supe que era algo de lo que quería formar parte.
