What skill have you always wanted to learn? How about learning to repair a bike, how to cut hair, or how to photograph animals? Perhaps it’s time to grab that sewing machine out of your parents’ attic and learn how to sew a dress, ski beanies, or embroider jeans? If you’ve fancied a hammer and nails, why not fashion a beautiful solid wood side table with your own hands? Welcome to the 2025 Joy Projects, an annual event where 8th grade Cutthroats explore and develop a new skill that brings joy to their and others’ lives. The lesson? Follow your passion and acquire a new skill in the process! 

Launched in 2020, the three-month course has fast become an 8th grade tradition. While each student's self-directed project is the centerpiece, the course has also expanded in recent years from a traditional research effort into an opportunity for 8th graders to start asking big questions about their learning process, the value of community, how to find purpose in work, and where joy even comes from in the first place. Throughout the process, students showed immense commitments to their passions and demonstrated exceptional planning, organization, documentation, and presentation skills. In the end, Joy Projects allowed both students and teachers to connect with others, exhibit their passions, learn new skills, and relieve stress while doing something fun, whether it was learning how to cook Thai, painting a mural on the school lunchroom wall to encourage composting or how to play the piano. This year's Joy Projects were presented in late February. 

¡Que Haya Alegría (“Joy”)! 
¿Qué habilidad has querido siempre aprender? ¿Qué tal aprender a reparar una bicicleta, a cortar el pelo o a fotografiar animales? ¿Quizá ha llegado el momento de coger esa máquina de coser del desván de tus padres y aprender a coser un vestido, gorros de esquí o bordar vaqueros? Si te apetece un martillo y unos clavos, ¿por qué no fabricar con tus propias manos una preciosa mesa auxiliar de madera maciza? Bienvenidos a los Proyectos “Joy” (Alegría) 2025, un evento anual en el que los Cutthroats de 8º grado exploran y desarrollan una nueva habilidad que aporta alegría a sus vidas y a las de los demás. ¿La lección? Sigue tu pasión y adquiere una nueva habilidad en el proceso. 

Iniciado en 2020, este curso de tres meses se ha convertido rápidamente en una tradición en el 8º grado. Si bien el proyecto autodirigido por cada estudiante es la pieza central, el curso también se ha ampliado en los últimos años de un esfuerzo de investigación tradicional a una oportunidad para que los estudiantes de 8º grado comiencen a hacer grandes preguntas sobre su proceso de aprendizaje, el valor de la comunidad, cómo encontrar un propósito en el trabajo, y de dónde viene la alegría en primer lugar. A lo largo del proceso, los alumnos mostraron un inmenso compromiso con sus pasiones y demostraron unas excepcionales dotes de planificación, organización, documentación y presentación. Al final, los “Joy Projects” permitieron tanto a los alumnos como a los maestros conectar con otros, mostrar sus pasiones, aprender nuevas habilidades y aliviar el estrés mientras hacían algo divertido, ya fuera aprender a cocinar tailandés, pintar un mural en la pared del comedor escolar para fomentar el compostaje o aprender a tocar el piano.
