ES: Biography Day

SVCS WELCOMES ISSAC NEWTON AND CATHERINE THE GREAT

Sun Valley Community School is powered by  traditions. There are all-school traditions like Engl Cup and Powder Day; Upper School has Bob Doyle Day and Senior Prank, and in the Elementary School, the 2nd grade's Biography Day is one tradition that has been a 2nd grade staple for at least a decade. For longtime teacher Tricia St. George '95, it's one of her favorite units because her students take ownership over and excitement in their learning. It’s also a great opportunity to become more confident in public speaking. 

This year, 20 famous people from the past and present appeared in the Elementary School's Community Room in early February to give the audience a glimpse into each of their accomplishments and a snapshot of their life. This year introduced the audience to greats in the world of athletics, science, business leaders, civil rights, and even magic. Think Isaac Newton to Catherine the Great, to football great Jerry Rice, and magician Harry Houdini. 

As part of the second grade social studies curriculum, students spend time learning about biographies. They listen to stories, read books, and watch videos about influential and inspiring individuals who have made an impact in our world. They conduct research using chrome books, learn to highlight pertinent information, and then put it into their own words. They write their reports in class and then embody their chosen historical or famous figure during Community Meeting. Bravo 2nd Grade!

Sun Valley Community School se nutre de tradiciones. Hay tradiciones de todo el colegio como Engl Cup y Powder Day; la Escuela Secundaria tiene el Día de Bob Doyle y el Día de la Broma del Grado 12, y en la Escuela Primaria, el Día de la Biografía del grado 2 es una tradición que ha sido un elemento básico de este grado durante al menos una década. Para la maestra veterana Tricia St. George (graduada en el 95), es una de sus unidades favoritas porque sus alumnos se apropian de su aprendizaje y se entusiasman con él. También es una gran oportunidad para que adquieran confianza al hablar en público.

Este año, 20 personajes famosos del pasado y del presente aparecieron en la Sala Comunitaria de la Escuela Primaria a principios de febrero para ofrecer al público una visión de cada uno de sus logros y una instantánea de su vida. Este año el público conoció a grandes figuras del mundo del atletismo, la ciencia, los negocios, los derechos civiles e incluso la magia. Desde Isaac Newton hasta Catalina la Grande, pasando por el gran futbolista Jerry Rice o el mago Harry Houdini.

Como parte del programa de estudios sociales de segundo grado, los alumnos dedican tiempo a aprender sobre biografías. Escuchan historias, leen libros y ven vídeos sobre personas influyentes e inspiradoras que han tenido un impacto en nuestro mundo. Investigan utilizando Chromebooks, aprenden a resaltar la información pertinente y luego la expresan con sus propias palabras. Escriben sus informes en clase y luego encarnan a la figura histórica o famosa que han elegido durante la Reunión Comunitaria. ¡Bravo 2º Grado!
