A longtime pillar of SVCS education, service plays a key role throughout the school year for Cutthroats in all divisions. Under returning Community Connections Coordinator Paige McNeil, Cutthroats lent a hand to The Hunger Coalition through fruit gleaning or pie baking, helped clean up the Big Wood River with the Wood River Land Trust, and participated in La Mesa Comunitaria. As part of the 8th grade Food Unit and the 8th grade fall trip, 31 students spent time at The Hunger Coalition. Their hard work turned out 325 lbs of fruit picked, 100 pounds of vegetables picked, compost turned, plum jam made, dozens of eggs packed and apples sorted!

La Mesa Comunitaria, a student-led initiative by Sun Valley Community School (SVCS) and Wood River High School (WRHS) was founded in 2021. This fall, numerous Cutthroats helped prep and participate in La Comunitaria’s first-ever Redfish Day in August. La Mesa Comunitaria partners with more than 50 local businesses to support events that not only include entertainment for children (arts and crafts, face painting, games), free books for kids, but also resource sharing tables with other Wood River Valley nonprofits including The Advocates, The Hunger Coalition, The Space, and Far & Wise. More events will be held throughout the year. Its mission is to “Build bridges between people in our valley by providing meals, joy, resources, and a sense of community to everyone.” Its primary outreach is the Latinx community and it hosts 5-8 events a year, primarily in low-income neighborhoods, parks, local businesses, and religious institutions. Since its founding, the organization has hosted or participated in 55 events across the Wood River Valley and Shoshone, served 3,900+ meals, and involved more than 420 students from both schools, accounting for 315 volunteer days. Past key events include hosting the first community gathering for Limelight Condo residents following a tragic fire in 2022, the support of more than 500 Peruvian immigrants through meals, clothing, and school orientation in 2022, and Pachamanca in 2024, an event that involved more than 15 Peruvian immigrants to help organize and served 200 guests.

Un pilar fundamental de la educación en Sun Valley Community School, el servicio a la comunidad desempeña un papel fundamental durante todo el año escolar para los Cutthroats en todas las divisiones. Este otoño, los Cutthroats apoyaron a The Hunger Coalition recogiendo fruta o preparando pasteles, ayudaron a limpiar el río Big Wood con el Wood River Land Trust y participaron en La Mesa Comunitaria. Como parte de la Unidad de Alimentos de 8º grado y el viaje de otoño de 8º grado, 31 estudiantes pasaron tiempo en The Hunger Coalition. Su arduo trabajo resultó en la recolección de 142 kilos de fruta, 45 kilos de verduras, la remoción de compost, la elaboración de mermelada de ciruela, el empaquetado de docenas de huevos y la clasificación de manzanas.

La Mesa Comunitaria, una iniciativa estudiantil de Sun Valley Community School (SVCS) y la Escuela Secundaria de Wood River (WRHS), se fundó en 2021. Desde su fundación, la organización ha organizado o participado en 55 eventos en el Wood River Valley y la comunidad de Shoshone, ha servido más de 3900 comidas e involucrado a más de 420 estudiantes de ambas escuelas, sumando 315 días de voluntariado.
