Cutthroat Service Learning: The Community Table/La Mesa Comunitaria

Launched in January, 2021, The Community Table/La Mesa Comunitaria had its first event in April of 2021 and things haven’t slowed down since. Its vision? To build bridges between people in our valley by providing meals, joy, resources, and a sense of community to those in need. A community initiative, it has served neighborhoods in the Wood River Valley, hosting family events entirely run by students with assistance from local teachers and community organizers and organizations. Since its inception, The Community Table has hosted or contributed to 24 events so far. More than 20 local businesses support us or partner with the organization, and to date, counts 100 different volunteers as having participated as part of the cause. Since May, The Community Table has participated in seven events, including the recent Hispanic Heritage Festivals in Hailey and Carey where volunteers provided face painting and tissue flower and piñata crafts. The Community Table also hosted a special dinner and an all school food drive for the residents of Ketchum’s Limelight Condominimum whose building was ravaged by a fire. 

Says Calysta Phillips, Service Learning and Community Connections Coordinator at SVCS, "This has been an amazing initiative that has come to be very organically with student input every step of the way. We're finding that by providing a place and time for community members to gather, all kinds of connections are happening that we never even foresaw, between students, community members, and organizations. It keeps building on itself and its impacts are growing in ways untold. It was really cool to be able to respond so quickly to the Limelight Condo residents. We realized that we have a format that works really well."

APRENDER A SERVIR COMO UN CUTTHROATS
Lanzada en enero de 2021, La Mesa Comunitaria tuvo su primer evento en abril de 2021 y las cosas no han disminuido desde entonces. ¿Su visión? Construir puentes entre la gente de nuestro valle proporcionando comidas, alegría, recursos y un sentido de comunidad a los necesitados. Una iniciativa comunitaria que ha servido a los barrios del Valle de Wood River, organizando eventos familiares totalmente dirigidos por estudiantes con la ayuda de maestros locales y organizadores y organizaciones de la comunidad. Desde su creación, La Mesa Comunitaria ha acogido o contribuido a 24 eventos hasta ahora. Más de 20 empresas locales nos apoyan o se asocian con la organización y, hasta la fecha, cuenta con 100 voluntarios diferentes que han participado en la causa. Desde mayo, La Mesa Comunitaria ha participado en siete eventos, incluidas las recientes Fiestas de la Herencia Hispana en Hailey y Carey, en las que los voluntarios se encargaron de pintar caras y hacer manualidades con flores y piñatas. La Mesa Comunitaria también organizó una cena especial y una campaña de recogida de alimentos para los residentes del Limelight Condominium de Ketchum, cuyo edificio fue devastado por un incendio. 

Dice Calysta Phillips, Coordinadora de Aprendizaje de Servicios y Conexiones Comunitarias en SVCS, "Esta ha sido una iniciativa increíble que ha llegado a ser muy orgánicamente con el aporte de los estudiantes en cada paso de nuestro camino. Nos hemos dado cuenta de que al proporcionar un lugar y un momento para que los miembros de la comunidad se reúnan, se están produciendo todo tipo de conexiones que ni siquiera habíamos previsto, entre estudiantes, miembros de la comunidad y organizaciones. Se sigue construyendo sobre sí mismo y sus impactos crecen de forma incalculable. Fue muy interesante poder responder tan rápidamente a los residentes del condominio Limelight. Nos dimos cuenta de que tenemos un formato que funciona realmente bien".
