Creative Arts Academy

The goal of the Creative Arts Academy is to allow students to pursue in-depth their passion for either the visual or performing arts in order to foster and grow their potential as artists and performers.

The curriculum of the Creative Arts Academy provides pre-professional training in the arts and a comprehensive college preparatory curriculum, which will result in students receiving a rich and diverse education in both the arts and academics. Students will find their arts education enhanced by teachers who are working professionals in their respective fields. The core requirements for the Creative Arts Academy are focused on the disciplines of drama, visual arts, and music. Students may join as either freshmen or sophomores via an open admissions procedure, however, students must declare a focus in their applications and must meet certain benchmarks at the end of each year in order to continue.

Students transferring to Community School as juniors or seniors may apply as long as they have met some minimum requirements in order to complete the program successfully. All students will be required to have a final performance or exhibit as a culminating event by the end of the senior year in order to complete the Creative Arts Academy program.

Students in each discipline would be advised and guided through the requirements of the program by the full-time faculty teaching that discipline.

Examples of core academic classes that students would be encouraged to take might be Shakespeare (English), Literature of the Absurd (English), Sensing Place (English or English/Science), Introduction to Psychology (History) or History of the Creative Arts (History/Art), depending what is being offered for the term. Students may also submit Alternative Course Contracts in order to get credit for classes and workshops that they are pursuing outside of the regular school day in order to meet the curricular requirements of their chosen discipline.
