4 Year Olds, Daily Schedule

The Community School

Early Childhood Center

4-Year-Old Program
8:00 am-12:15 pm or 8:00 am- 2:15 pm

Greeting Time/Free Exploration, 7:45-8:45
Arrival time is between 7:45 and 8:30am. Areas in the classroom are open to children and their parents for exploration. It is important that all children are settled by 8:45am so we can join together as a community and move into small group time.

Class Time, 9:00-12:00

During our mornings together, we attend group meetings, sing, share news, discuss classroom events, listen to stories, develop projects, revisit documentation, plan adventures on and off campus, make decisions about the day, collaborate, negotiate and resolve conflicts, engage in center work, grow and cook foods, perform, take care of plants and classroom pets, play outside, and visit the atelier to explore and create.

Morning Snack
A healthy snack is prepared by the children and served around 10:00 a.m.

Atelier
The children visit the atelier, or art studio, daily. The atelierista, or art teacher, uses both planned projects and the students’ own interests and free exploration.

Lunch
We come together to eat lunch at approximately 11:30am. Teachers and children sit together and practice manners and proper use of utensils. Children bring their lunches from home. Students who are enrolled for half days are picked up at 12:15pm.

Afternoon Activities, 12:15-2:15
After lunch is quiet time. Teachers read stories and play soothing music while children lay quietly on their mats, typically with a special soft toy or blanket from home. Following quiet time, children continue projects, work in small groups, bake, dance, climb, act, create, visit the campus library, and reflect on the day.

After Care, 2:15-5:15
For an hourly fee, children may stay from 2:15-5:15pm. Activities include outside play, free exploration of centers, or activities with a music or art specialist. Prompt pick up by 5:15pm is a necessity.

Daily Documentation
Teachers will display photos and documentation of children’s language and work each day, usually by the end of the day. Copies are available for parents.
