Welcome to the Alumni Home Page for graduates and past students of Community School.
Whatever their
passions and their goals, Community School students are prepared for success in
college and eager to make a difference in the world. Our graduates go on to
live their dreams, fulfill their passions and make a difference in the world. They
are teachers, researchers, entrepreneurs, business professionals, scientists,
outdoor guides, writers, doctors and nurses, activists and inventors, athletes
and artists. They are scattered around the country and around the globe. Some graduates
are back at Community School in new roles as involved parents of their own
children and some as faculty members.
Here is a taste
of what some graduates of Community School are doing:
Chadd Montgomery • Class of 2002
• Syracuse, NY:
“Community School prepared me with the academic foundation to excel at the
undergraduate and graduate school levels. Having a passion for learning, and
understanding that learning is a process that continues outside the four walls
of a classroom, has served me well throughout life. I certainly thank the
Community School for instilling and fostering that mentality.”
Work: I graduated, cum laude, from Syracuse University with
a law degree and a master's in modern American history this past May. I sat for
and passed the New York bar exam and will be sworn in as an attorney in late
January. After being sworn in, I will enter the U.S. Army JAG Corps as a First
Lieutenant. After I conclude my service with the JAG Corps (I'm still not
sure how long I will stay after my initial four year commitment) I would like to
move back to Idaho. I'm interested in pursuing a legal career back in the Gem
state as well exploring the possibility of running for political office.
Hayley Mortimer • Class of 1998 • Helena, MT
"All those outdoor trips to
Yellowstone in 8th and 9th grades must have paid off
because I have dedicated the past 8 years of my career to promoting the
advancement of the National Park Service to be a world class professional
organization. This seems most fitting as the Service is charged with protecting
some our country’s most treasured landscapes, but needs the talent and
resources to do this effectively – something that is in short supply in these
economic times."
Work: National Parks Conservation Association, Senior
Director for the Center for Park Management.
Corey Warren • Class of 2004
• Bellingham, WA
“Community
School did a great job of instilling a solid writing and grammar curriculum and
strong social relationships with both teachers/trip leaders as well as fellow
students. In short, it taught me to be a strong and clear communicator. This
skill has largely gotten me to where I am. Amongst the academics, TCS taught
the important connection with our outdoor surroundings - to get into the woods
and appreciate what's there, so that we would have the attachment and incentive
to protect it for future generations. I think I am a great example of how TCS
has done their job at getting another person out into the world that is
educated, happy, passionate, and full of appreciation for my roots.”
Work: Running my own business, a screen print and design
studio and storefront as well as developing a fashion brand under the same
working name, INNATE. I plan to continue expressing my creative side and
blending it with business and commerce, utilizing my communication skills to
create and contribute to products, movements, and energy I believe in. I hope
to be financially successful and a positive influence on younger generations
and how they make their dreams a reality without compromising their souls.
Joanie Baumgartner • Class of 2004 • San Diego, CA
"Community
School helped get me here because it taught me that you are the only one who
can "make it happen" in your life. Community School makes you
take responsibility for your education, which translates to real life in a big
way. You need to make your own success. I still remember some life lessons from
the incredible teachers I had at TCS, especially from Dick Brown, Bob Brock and
Bob Doyle, Phil Huss, and Richard Hislaire."
Work: Finishing up massage therapy school. I am certified by
the state of California after nearly 700 hours of training, and will be taking
the national exam (think SAT's for massage therapy) in 2012.I am also working
on getting my private practice off the ground, which will be my main focus in
the new year. "All Right Now Bodywork" is focused on restoring health
and balance with Swedish massage, hot stone massage, and deep tissue sculpting
massage. (Please visit www.allrightnowbodywork.com
for more information.) My plans and dreams for the future include making
my private practice my main source of income, while allowing me to travel and
continue to participate in the theatrical community of San Diego. (I've been
acting, directing and costuming on various live shows and some TV/film).
Ryan Drew • Class of 2002 •
San Diego,
CA
“
Community School offered me such a unique opportunity in high school to combine
my love of the outdoors and being active with working hard and obtaining
knowledge in the classroom. The faculty at Community School were always in
my court, setting me up to succeed. What helped me get to where I am
today started within the walls of Community School and started with the
workload and level of effort that was expected as a student in the Upper
School. Being a part of all the Outdoor Program at Community School really
differentiated me from my peer group today and, when I tell them, not too many
people believe the types of trips and outdoor based activities that I was able
to take part in at Community School."
Work: I
currently work for The Active Network (NYSE: ACTV, ActiveNetwork.com, Active.com)
based in Sorrento Valley. The Active Network is an online event management and
technology company that aims to connect people with the things that they want,
love and need to do. We operate in a number of different verticals, but
the one most people know us for is the endurance market. We power some of
the biggest named events like the Ironman series triathlons and Rock and Roll
Marathon series. Chances are that if you have registered for any type of
endurance event online (5K, 10K, Half-Marathon, Marathon, Triathlon, etc.), you
have probably used Active.com.
My current
title is "People Potential Analyst". It is a unique hybrid role
in Human Resources focused on Compensation Analysis as well as Workforce
Analytics. I work on our Total Rewards team, which deals with how we manage
our human capital, how we reward our employees and the overall employment deal
(everything from career path opportunities, job leveling, to
performance management). This is a new move for me as I have spent
the past 3.5 years working in the Operations arm of the business specifically
focused on managing two very different customer-facing technical support teams.
Alyssa Duval Edwards • Class of 1991 • Bellevue, WA
“How didn't Community
School help me? The teachers and staff at CS instilled in me a desire to be
better than status quo, and the confidence to know that I could achieve
anything. They held me accountable, pushed me to do more, and made me feel like
I really mattered.”
Work: My title is Director of Compensation, Rewards and
Communication at Alaska Airlines. I oversee all of our compensation programs
including incentive pay, as well as people systems, communication programs for
employees, rewards and recognition programs and (my favorite) employee travel.
I hope to continue to work for such an amazing company, one
that gives me the opportunity to really contribute, but also the flexibility to
spend time with my family. We spent five weeks in Ketchum this summer and I
can't wait to do that again!
