It is widely accepted that the human race is living in a manner that is not sustainable. Our level of resource consumption is destroying natural ecosystems and changing the natural balances on our planet. We live in an unprecedented time in human history; our actions have widespread and profound impacts on our surroundings. Because of our global economy, these impacts happen across the world and far from the consumer’s eyes. The list of current environmental problems is staggering and one just needs to delve a little bit into each one before it becomes clear that current practices need to change. Our hope is to create a culture of sustainability at the Community School so we can “be the change you want to see.”

Community School Environmental Vision Statement

As a school we are dedicated to acting in sustainable ways and cultivating environmentally educated citizens who take initiative to lead by example in their community. We will strive to extend our Outdoor Program’s Leave No Trace ethic to our entire campus. With this as our guide, we will work to make the Community School a model for sustainability.

  • Community School will integrate sustainable practices and our Leave No Trace ethic into the K-12 curriculum and all other school related activities. All students will gain an understanding of environmental issues and sustainability.
  • The Green Team will create environmental resource documents to help the school community reach our environmental goals. This will include tips on how to run a school event in the most sustainable way possible and could include information about where to get real plates, purchase locally grown food, etc.
  • Community School will purchase supplies that meet environmentally preferable standards and will use resources in a sustainable way.

Time Line For Implementation

  1. A committee of teachers, students, administration, and staff, called The Green Team, will be created to oversee the implementation of our Environmental Vision Statement. The committee will be comprised of students from all three divisions. (Fall 2010)
  2. The Green Team will define how the Leave No Trace ethic applies to our campus. (January 2011)
  3. The Green Team will create environmental standards with regards to food deliveries. (January 2011)
  4. Each department will complete a document showing how they intend to comply with the new Environmental Vision Statement. Each department will be required to look at their curriculum to determine if they are meeting the goals of the Environmental Vision Statement. The members of The Green Team will be a part of this process and will assist departments in generatingreports for meeting the sustainability goals. (Completed by June 2011)
  5. The Science Department will design an Environmental Science class and will recommend that it become a graduation requirement. (2011-2012 school year)
  6. Community School will work toward committing a percentage of the school’s operating budget to sustainability projects and initiatives.
  7. The Green Team will create a series of environmental guidelines for the school to follow based on the latest sustainability practices. Examples would include not purchasing bottled water for events, purchasing environmentally friendly cleaning products, turning off lights when a room is not in use, and carpooling requirements.
  8. The Green Team will create environmental resource documents to help the school community reach our environmental goals. This will include tips on how to run a school event in the most sustainable way possible and could include information about where to get real plates, purchase locally grown food, etc.
