Mark Eshman, Chair Mark Eshman's began his non-profit career at age 14 at a McGovern for President rally in Los Angeles. In addition to his active involvement in many subsequent political campaigns, Mark's community service has included the founding of the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art's largest support group. He was also a volunteer Big Brother and has served on the Duke University Alumni Admissions Advisory Committee. Mark is a graduate of "Leadership Wood River Valley," a basketball coach for the Blaine County Recreation District and is entering his seventh year as a trustee of our school. Mark studied economics at the University of London and is a graduate of Duke University's School of Public Policy. He is a Senior Vice President for Smith Barney in Ketchum. Mark and his wife Jill have two daughters who both attend The Community School, Emily (11th) and Erica (9th).
Whit Atkinson, Treasurer Whit, a life-long resident of the Wood River Valley, attended The Community School in grades 7-12 and graduated with the Class of 1982. After earning a degree in business economics from Colorado College in 1986, Whit continued his education at the University of Washington where he studied accounting. He returned to the Valley in 1988 to help manage the family business, Atkinsons' Markets. A community business leader, Whit also serves as a member of the Sun Valley Junior Hockey Board of Directors. He and his wife, Susie, have two children attending the school, Peter (10th) and Morgan (7th).
Leslie Benz
Leslie grew up in Miami. She moved to Ketchum in 1982 after graduating from Stanford in Economics. After a short period of working in the world of finance, she wound up in the restaurant business. Leslie was a partner in Barsotti's and later The BBC for fourteen years. She has also been the chef for Far and Away Adventures for the last seven years. She is a actively involved in the Parents' Association and is a dedicated mom to her two sons, Colby (8th) and Taylor (10th). Leslie looks forward to being a part of the Community School for many years to come.
Barbara W. Boswell, Ex-Officio
Barbara has lived in the Wood River Valley since 1986. She moved from Southern California where she received her masters from California State University Northridge and her doctorate from the University of Southern California. She has a love of and commitment to education and has taught at all levels from the third grade through college. She also served on the board of the Paso Robles Joint Union High School District from 1981-1985 and was its chair for a period of time. She has been a member of The Community School's board since 1993 and served as Chair of Campaign 2000. Barbara also has been on the board of Claremont McKenna College for the past ten years.
Jack Bunce After living here part time since 1995, Jack moved to the Wood River Valley full time in 2002 with his wife Elizabeth Nalen Bunce. Jack is a managing director of Hellman and Friedman, an investment firm based in San Francisco. He serves on numerous corporate boards including the National Information Consortium, Arch Capital Group, Active Business Network, Western Wireless and Birddog Solutions. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations from Stanford University and a MBA from Harvard Business School. Jack has five children at TCS Christopher Nalen (7th), Austin Nalen (9th), Wyatt (9th), Josie (7th), Devon (`06).
Charles Conn
Charles is Senior Advisor to the Gordon & Betty Moore Foundation, a charitable foundation established by Intel founder, Gordon Moore. He focuses on conservation projects, including the Foundation’s wild salmon ecosystems initiative, Palmyra, Agua Boa in Brazil, and other western public lands. Before committing his time to conservation work, Charles was an entrepreneur and business consultant. He co-founded Citysearch and as CEO led the company through its mergers with Interactive Corporation’s Ticketmaster Online (1998) and Ticketmaster (2001), as well as its public offering (1998) and acquisitions of Microsoft Sidewalk, Match.com, and other companies. In 2001 he was selected as a Henry Crown Fellow of the Aspen Institute. Prior to starting TMCS, Charles was a partner with McKinsey & Company. He is a graduate of Harvard Business School, Oxford University, where he was a Rhodes Scholar, and Boston University. Charles and his wife Beverley Robertson have their three children at TCS Alex (10th), Cameron (9th) and Hannah (3rd).
Donna Delahorne
Donna moved to Ketchum from Singapore in 1999 where she and her husband Andrew Tian had been living for 6 years. She received a B.A. in English from Carlton College in Northfield MN and then spent 17 years working for Cargill, Inc. in various commodity trading and management positions throughout the U.S. and Asia. Donna is a very active member of the TCS Parents' Association. Donna and Andrew have a son Averell in 7th grade and a daughter Moyo in 4th grade at the school.
Michael Engl, Emeritus Michael has been an active contributor to the arts and education for many years. He has been actively involved with the Sun Valley Center for the Arts as a member of the Advisory Board, and Michael has served The Community School in many capacities over the years. He was Chairman of Board of Trustees of The Mountain School, and was instrumental in the effort to merge the two schools in 1988. He also served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of our School for six years. He is currently on the Board of the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe and is the Chair of it Research Center Committee. Michael was Dean and Chairman of the Visual Communications Division at New School University in New York and has spent many years managing and directing family trusts. Currently Michael is Vice President of The Lensic Performing Arts Center in Santa Fe and Chairman of its Research Center for Studies in Modernism. His daughter Riley graduated from the School in 1992.
Leigh Everitt
Leigh is the mother of George(4th), Henry(3rd), James(1st), and William(K). She and her husband, Jamie, moved to Ketchum 11 years ago from Marin County, California. She has been an active volunteer with The Wood River Community YMCA, and has been a Community School room parent for the past 4 years. She received a B.A. from St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y. in 1988.
Jay Hagenbuch, Secretary
Jay and Kim Hagenbuch moved to the Valley full time in 2003, after owning a home here since 1995. They have five children-- Henry (20), Hunter (18), Hilary (19), Sydney (4th) and Johnny (Kindergarten). Jay is Chairman of M&H Realty Partners, which is a San Francisco-based, real estate opportunity fund business that he co-founded ten years ago. He is also a private equity investor and has been a director of a number of public and private companies. He served on the board of the San Francisco Symphony for eight years, spending six years as Chairman of the Finance Committee. For eight years, he was also a Trustee and Board Chair of Town School for Boys in San Francisco that Henry and Hunter attended. Jay received a BA degree from Princeton University and an MBA degree from Stanford University.
David Holmes
David attained a B.A. in political science at Middlebury (1964) and an M.A. in International Affairs at Columbia University (1966). He attained a Ph.D. in higher educational administration, with cognate work in Chinese politics, at the University of Denver (1974). He worked at the University of Vermont, where he created a university-wide instructional improvement and faculty development center. He headed up the center for 13 years, taught graduate courses and was tenured as an associate professor. While researching a book on the McCarthy era in education, he began work as a program officer at the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education in Washington (FIPSE) in Washington, D.C. He is the author of the book Stalking the Academic Communist published by in 1988. In 1991 David became the headmaster’s at his old school, Suffield Academy in Connecticut. He served as Headmaster until 2004. In 2004 David moved to Sun Valley and became Vice President for Programs at the Foundation for Excellent Schools (FES) and joined in creating the Sun Valley Leadership Institute. FES has programs in 130 schools across the nation with the aim of raising aspirations and educational attainment of youth in low income urban and rural communities. In August 2006, he assumed duties as Executive Director of the Lee Pesky Learning Center. David is married to Antonia Kiley Holmes and has two children, Chris and Caleb.
Karen MacMillan
Karen and her husband, David moved to Ketchum in 2000 with their children Alexander (8th) and Peter (6th.) After graduating from Stanford in history and economics, Karen held various agricultural and food industry position with Cargill, Inc. She attended the University of Minnesota Law School. In Minneapolis, she chaired events for children's hospitals and clinics and served on the investment committee for Waycrosse, Inc. She continues to be active serving as a trustee of non-profit boards, trusts and foundations as well as vice-president of an agricultural LLC.
Kristin Orr-Monroe Kristin, who was one of the very first students to attend The Community School when it was located in the basement of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, has lived in the Wood River Valley since 1971. Kristen is an active member of the Parents Association and served as co-vice-president of the Elementary School. She also has served on the Board of Directors of the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation and has been a sponsor of the Bill Janss Community Center Celebrity Golf Classic. She is the granddaughter of Peggy and Sigi Engl and her son Dylan (8th grade) attends the school.
Steven Shafran
Steven, and his family, Annie (10th), Maggie (9th), Reid (5th) and Isabelle (4rd) moved to Ketchum from Hong Kong in 2004. The family has been summer residents of the Wood River Valley since 1993, and Steven has been a winter visitor since 1966. Prior to moving to Ketchum, they lived in Asia for 11 years where Steven was a partner at Goldman Sachs. Steven continues to be professionally active in Hong Kong and China, where he owns an investment advisory company and is an investor in and director of several private and public companies. While in Hong Kong, Steven was a director of Summerbridge, a non-profit entity that runs very successful summer and year-round programs teaching English to children from financially disadvantaged families. He was also the Chairman of Goldman Sachs’ charitable contribution committee. Steven has a BA from the University of California at Berkeley and an MBA from Harvard University.
Peter Smith
Peter was born and raised in Southern California. After graduating from Santa Clara University with a degree in business administration, he joined a family business. Pete and his wife Becky moved to the Wood River Valley in the mid 1980s. His daughter Alison graduated from the Community School in '89. He has served on the boards of the Idaho Nature Conservancy, the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation, and the Sun Valley Center for the Arts. Becky has served on the Board of the Community School, as well as the Sun Valley Center for the Arts. Pete has four sons, the youngest of which was in college when they moved to Sun Valley.
Stewart Sonneland Stewart and Patty Sonneland moved to the valley 10 years ago to help establish a Young Life program here. Included in Young Life's work in the valley has been their annual house-building trips to Mexico. This year ten TCS students took part in the trip. Stewart and Patty have four children: Holly ('00), Joshua '(03), Caleb (12th), and Emily. Stewart graduated from Harvard with a degree in English in 1980.
Lisa Stelck
Lisa is the mother of Reed `05 and Cody (11th) Boeger. She and her husband, Bill, moved here 9 years ago from Palo Alto. Lisa is a licensed real estate professional. She was the founder and Director of two preschools in the Bay Area. She has been an active member of the TCS Parents Association and currently serves as Upper School VP. Lisa graduated from UCLA and received her MBA from Stanford.
